In Come Fly the World Julia Cooke, daughter of a former airline executive, offers a candid look at the lives and careers of the jet-age stewardesses of Pan Am—from the over-the-top application process that required potential employees to fit a particular physical profile, speak multiple languages, and demonstrate the skills of a foreign service officer—to their wild and often dangerous experiences in the air. As the women worked to uphold the glamorous image of Pan Am, they also acted as diplomats, interacting with international politicians and helping to transport American soldiers to and from war zones during the long, drawn-out Vietnam War. Cooke destroys popular caricatures of the profession and highlights the stewardesses’ crucial role in major wartime missions—including the evacuation of thousands of children during the fall of Saigon. Although they came from different backgrounds, the stewardesses of Pan Am had something in common: they were risk-takers and leaders of liberation who challenged the norms of their time and boldly battled racism, misogyny, and inequality to claim their rightful space in the air—and in the world.

2. What does the author mean when she writes that “what was revolutionary was the lack of should” for stewardesses (12)? How did a career as a Pan Am stewardess allow the women to eschew and challenge some of the norms and expectations around gender at this time?
